A new chapter for an old spring

Under new ownership. Same water, same hands.

Family-owned again since 2026, with a new name: Beverly Zen Hot Springs. The spring is unchanged, and so is the massage, facial and scrub team you know. What’s changing is the care. We’re restoring the spa piece by piece, and we’d love to hear how we’re doing.

The ritual

How a visit flows.

Take it in this order, at your own pace. Two hours is plenty.

  1. Shower & soak

Rinse, then ease into the mineral pool. It arrives from the well at 96–105 °F.

  2. Cold plunge

A short dip resets the body. Alternate with the hot pool as many times as you like.

  3. Eucalyptus steam

Warm, fragrant and soft on the lungs. Breathe slowly.

  4. Dry sauna

Finish the heat cycle, then rest on the loungers with tea and water.

  5. Your treatment

Book ahead: a body scrub, body care, massage or facial. Admission is included with body treatments and massage.

The water

Real spring water, from the ground beneath your feet.

A hot tub is heated city water. Ours rises on its own from an artesian well 2,200 feet down: naturally warm, naturally alkaline and rich in sodium bicarbonate, the same water Angelenos once bottled and drank as “Wonder Water.”

  1. 1910Richard S. Grant drills for oil on a wheat field and strikes hot mineral water instead. The well supplies the neighborhood until city mains arrive in 1915.
  2. 1930sBottled and sold as “Wonder Water,” ten cents a gallon, until just after World War II.
  3. 1984A Korean bathhouse is built over the well: gender-separated pools, steam, sauna and scrub rooms.
  4. 2023A development plan threatens to cap the spring. The neighborhood organizes, more than 1,500 people sign a petition, and the plan is withdrawn.
  5. 2026New family ownership, a new name, and a promise: keep the spring flowing and restore the spa around it.
105 °FAt the source

The water leaves the ground at about 105 °F. The pools run from 96 to 105 °F.

pH 8.7Naturally alkaline

Mildly alkaline: pure water is 7.0 and seawater about 8.1. Alkaline water feels slippery on the skin.

868 mg/LAlkalinity, all bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate is the spring’s signature mineral, just as it was in the first analysis in 1931.

543 mg/LSodium

About a twentieth of the sodium in seawater: lightly mineral, never briny.

1.9 mg/LCalcium

Almost none, and under 1 mg/L of magnesium. That makes the water very soft, so it leaves no film on skin or hair.

11.2 mg/LSilicon

Dissolved silica, picked up from the rock the water travels through.

Independent laboratory analysis of a sample collected June 17, 2019; tap a number to see what it means. Many guests tell us their skin feels softer and their body calmer after a soak. We make no medical claims. Come and see how it feels.

First visit

First time at a hot spring spa? You’re in good hands.

The honest answers to the questions everyone asks before their first visit.

Is Beverly Zen Hot Springs the same as Beverly Hot Springs?

Yes. Beverly Hot Springs became Beverly Zen Hot Springs in 2026, under new family ownership. It’s the same spring, the same building at 308 N Oxford Ave, the same phone number and the same team.

Do I have to be naked?

Nudity is optional in both the women’s and men’s sections. Swimsuits are welcome in the pools; street clothes and underwear are not. Please shower before entering the pools.

Is the spa co-ed?

No. The hot spring pool, cold plunge, steam room and sauna are in separate women’s and men’s sections, which is part of why the spa stays so quiet. Couples and friends can relax together in the lobby before and after.

Do I need a reservation?

Walk in any time for the pools. Body scrubs, massages and facials should be booked ahead by phone at (323) 734-7000; weekends fill up first. A credit card holds your appointment.

How much does it cost?

Admission is $50 Monday to Friday and $55 on weekends and holidays, for two hours in the spa. It’s included with any body scrub, body care treatment or massage. Body scrubs start at $80 and massages at $120.

How long can I stay?

Each spa visit is two hours, with one entry per day. That’s enough for the full circuit: soak, plunge, steam, sauna, rest. If you have a treatment booked, arrive early and soak first; your treatment time is in addition to the soak.

What should I bring?

Just yourself. We provide a locker, towels, slippers, a hair cap, shower and hair products and a hair dryer. Many regulars bring their own non-slip spa sandals, and a swimsuit if they prefer one. Please leave valuables at home; we can’t be responsible for items in lockers.

What is a Korean body scrub?

A head-to-toe exfoliation with a coarse mitt, performed by a specialist in a private wet room and followed by a rinse. It’s vigorous, but tell your therapist if you’d like it gentler. Your skin will feel smoother for about a week. Admission is included with every scrub.

Can I bring my phone inside?

Phones and cameras stay in your locker, and we keep voices low. The spa is quiet on purpose, so everyone can drift off.

Can I bring children?

The spa is designed for adults. Minors are admitted only with a parent or guardian and written consent, and wear swimwear during treatments. Please call ahead so we can plan for you.

Is there parking?

Yes, and it’s free: our own lot is at 311 N Serrano Ave, around the corner from the entrance on Oxford.

How do gratuities work?

Gratuities for your therapist are appreciated and accepted in cash only; there’s an ATM on site. We take Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and cash for everything else.

Are gift certificates from before the ownership change still valid?

Yes. Certificates bought under the previous owners are honored in full. Bring yours in, or read us the number when you book.

What guests say

The water. The scrub. The quiet.

For forty years, guests have come back for the same three things: water that feels like velvet, scrub specialists who have worked here for decades, and pools quiet enough to fall asleep beside.

Gift certificates come in any amount, for admission or any treatment, and never expire. Buy one at the front desk or by phone, and we’ll hold it on file for the recipient if you like.
